Wicker Park Timber Loft Renovation
In the heart of Wicker Park, where historic industrial architecture meets vibrant street life, old timber lofts stand as coveted canvases for modern living. For one such space, the vision was one of transformation: to peel back the layers and create a light, airy sanctuary that felt both expansive and serene. The result is a masterclass in minimalist design and material harmony.
The Heart of the Loft: An Expanded, Minimalist Kitchen
The soul of this renovation is the kitchen. To achieve the open, flowing space the clients dreamed of, we made a bold move, borrowing square footage from an adjacent guest bedroom. This allowed us to introduce a magnificent white quartz waterfall island, an anchor that is both a functional workspace and a piece of sculptural beauty. A matching white quartz backsplash runs seamlessly up the wall, enhancing the clean, bright aesthetic.
To keep the atmosphere light and airy, we chose custom white oak cabinetry. The design is rigorously modern and minimalist, with a complete absence of visible hardware. The refrigerator and dishwasher are concealed behind custom panels, and the oven, cleverly housed in the island, is a touch-to-open, handleless model.
The most striking feature is the Pitt Cooking gas stove. In this innovative system, individual burners are integrated directly into the quartz countertop, eliminating the need for a traditional cooktop and creating an unbroken, sleek surface. It’s the ultimate expression of minimalist functionality.
A Moody Interlude: The Powder Room
In contrast to the sun-drenched feel of the main living area, the powder room is a dark and moody surprise. This intimate space offers a moment of drama and sophistication. We carried the same custom white oak cabinetry from the kitchen into this room, creating a thread of continuity. The true jewels of the space are the hand-blown glass pendants from Hennepin Made Lighting, which cast a soft, atmospheric glow.
A Seamless Flow: Living and Sleeping Spaces
The serene palette of white oak continues throughout the loft, creating a cohesive and calming flow. The same wood was used for open shelving in the living room, tying the spaces together.
In the primary bedroom, the airy aesthetic continues with custom white oak furniture. A touch of whimsy was added with a subtle cloud wallpaper, creating a dreamy, ethereal backdrop. The en-suite bathroom was also updated, with a new white oak vanity that connects it beautifully to the rest of the home's design story.
